Artist Spotlight: Valerie Blauvelt

“I am seeking. I am striving. I am in it with all of my heart.” -Vincent Van Gogh
I am a self-taught artist with a passion for abstract painting. My entry into the world of art is somewhat unconventional. After enjoying a 32-year corporate career in Marketing and Strategy, I discovered I was a “late bloomer” with a creative capability I never knew I had. Even though I frequently worked with graphic artists and designers on marketing campaigns, I never imagined I would become an artist after I retired. Moving to Florida gave me the inspiration and new appreciation of abstract art. Possibilities of creating paintings outside of the representational world were unlocked for me and that’s when my artistic journey began.
I am drawn to abstract painting because I enjoy the creative process where there are no rules. There is no “right or wrong”. This freedom of expression enables me to approach my painting from a totally spontaneous vision. Each painting evolves as I go along to an unknown destination. I am fascinated by the many interpretations that reveal themselves in the finished piece. My hope is that my work takes you on a visual journey that sparks your imagination and gives you free rein to delight in your own personal and unique discovery.
My paintings elicit strong emotional reactions and offer an exciting sensory experience. They reference the natural beauty of my surroundings in both Naples, Florida and Canandaigua, New York, where I live and paint. I use contrasting color, texture, and gestural techniques to create a sense of movement, energy, and dimension. Color, ranging from soft and serene to vibrant and invigorating, is the language I use to connect with my viewer and communicate my emotions. My style is sometimes ethereal, dreamy, and celestial. Other times it is dynamic and bursting with energetic expression. My desire is to invite the viewer to walk through an open door and see what is beyond the painted canvas. I love experimenting and educating myself about new techniques, tools, and mediums, always striving to continuously improve and innovate.
The loving encouragement of my family and friends motivates me to continue my artistic journey. This journey has gained momentum in ways I never expected. Immersing myself in my own creative world gives me joy and happiness, but what really excites me is when my work resonates with you on an emotional level. My goal is to create art that is visually aesthetic and brings you pleasure and enjoyment. I am grateful that I discovered a creative capability that lay hidden in me for years and I find the process of bringing it to the surface exhilarating.
