Artist Spotlight: Julie Spencer
March 15 - March 19
Julie has been painting and writing since she was in college. Her early work could be described as abstract expressionist, relying on the natural world of landscapes and figures to communicate the emotion behind the subject matter. Artists such as Rodin and Modigliani inspired her to push the boundaries of figural reality in order to heighten the crescendo of the emotional context.
As she has evolved as a painter, she has become more interested in communicating through structure, subtlety and texture, rejecting the recognizable for the abstract in an attempt to spark the viewer’s engagement and interpretation. Studying the works of Eva Hesse, Julie Mehretu, and Richard Diebenkorn encouraged her to expand her materials to pencil and charcoal mixed with oil stick and acrylic paint while pushing the boundaries of structure. She regularly mixes both cool and warm palettes, textures, interrupted lines and mark making in an attempt to show how imperfection can highlight emotion.
