Artist Richard Diedrich At JOEL SHAPSES GALLERY 6240 Shirley Street, Suite 102
About The Artist
Diedrich is an architect, author and painter. He is recognized as a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects for works of clubhouse architecture throughout the U.S. and fourteen countries internationally. In South Florida, he is known for design of Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s stores as well as amenity facilities at planned communities including Grey Oaks, Mediterra, and Collier’s Reserve in Naples. His practice led to sixteen summers of teaching clubhouse design at the Harvard GSD and three books published on architecture.
Painting Naples Architecture
As author and painter, Diedrich created a coffee-table book of the Historic Brookhaven community in Atlanta featuring over thirty paintings of homes. Currently, as part of the “Art Topics” program for Naples Art, he is capturing the romance of the architecture of Naples with watercolor on canvas “Portraits” of significant buildings from all eras, historic through mid-century and contemporary.
Man on the Edge – Abstractions
As a painter, Diedrich’s alter ego uses water media and ink on stretched canvas to characterize
“Man on the Edge”, the abstract depiction of humankind’s propensity to settle where the water meets the land, one raison d’etre of the attraction of South Florida. Communicating the theme, a diptych painting might show the beautiful seascape of the benign nature of land, water, and sky juxtaposed with a painting of nature unleashed, as in hurricane Irma.
“where exquisitely intimate passages and transitions pool and recede at the edges after they unfurl, sometimes wash away and reveal themselves in transparent veils of color sensation and gesture.” Michael David, Fine Arts Workshop
