Artist Julie Spencer Groves At INSPIRATIONS ARTISTS & DESIGN GALLERY 5450 B Shirley Street
About The Artist
Julie has been painting and writing since she was in college. Her early work could be described as abstract expressionist, relying on the natural world of landscapes and figures to communicate the emotion behind the subject matter. Artists such as Rodin and Modigliani inspired her to push the boundaries of figural reality in order to heighten the crescendo of the emotional context.
When I paint, it is to take a deep breath and relax into a language without words. I seek to drop my inclination towards perfection and acknowledge that imperfection is endlessly more interesting and compelling. Like a dance with the canvas where we step on one another’s toes for the first stanza, the canvas generally leads and teaches me to listen to what it is trying to say. Often, I am so busy focusing on my feet that by the time I’ve caught the rhythm, I look up and the painting I started has become something else. Sometimes the canvas sings clearly. More often we tussle, we disagree, we contradict, and in the end, we finish the painting and each of us knows we had something to say. My hope is that when the canvas and I are finished, we have left enough space for the viewer to join the dialogue and understand what went on between me and my canvas.
Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring. Marilyn Monroe
